3 Reasons Why You Should Ditch Your Archless Shoes

Foot arches

A foot arch — that upward curve in the middle of the foot when looking at it from the inside — is created by a collection of tendons from the foot and lower leg. When these tendons work together properly they form an arch. (When they do not, a person has a fallen arch or flat foot.).

Arches assist us in walking and running effectively. They help by storing energy, keeping the structure of the foot as we push off when taking a step, and serving as a shock absorber.

Problems from archless shoes

Choosing shoes with good arches can prevent certain problems from developing and aid in keeping our feet healthy.

Plantar fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis can cause a sharp stabbing pain near the heel in the bottom of the foot. Typically, it is most severe first thing in the morning though it can also occur after sitting or standing for long periods of time.

It can result when the fascia — a band of tissue that runs between the base of the toes and the heel bone — suffers damage. Shoes that lack good arch support can lead to the fascia being overstretched, torn, or inflamed.

Blisters

Shoes that lack arch support are often designed to be light and thin, which means little to no shock absorption. The result is that your heel takes the brunt of the impact with every step, which can lead to blisters on the bottom of your heel or on the Achilles tendon.

Achilles tendinitis

Archless shoes and their lack of support can cause feet to become flattened or pronated. This can contribute to additional stress on the Achilles tendon and calf muscles causing the tendon to become irritated and inflamed.

Good shoe choices

In order for your feet to be comfortable and safe, there are a few things to watch for when purchasing a new pair of shoes. Good arch support is key as is making sure the size is correct. Cushioning, shock absorption, and ankle support are other important things to consider.
